1.1 Overview
African agriculture is a major growth opportunity, but there are fundamental challenges hindering development.
Scale is essential to increasing efficiency, improving productivity and providing better livelihoods for farmers. However, large-scale commercial farms remain few, especially those involved with smallholders. Bureaucracy and unfavourable government policy hamper those that do exist.
Access to commercial finance and support for existing and emergent commercial farmers is another key ingredient that is currently lacking. The resources and expertise to create profitable agricultural businesses exist, but effective coordination and collaboration between the public and private sectors, and agribusinesses, are needed to tap into these resources. Private sector-led agribusiness is still to take off in many parts of Africa.
Prorustica’s core focus is the development of agribusiness-focused Public Private Partnerships. The partnerships we develop play an important role in assisting emergent farmers to become leading players in successful, commercially focused, value chains.
We work at the interface between public and private institutions providing strategic guidance to the development and implementation of joint business and social development initiatives.

• We take a fresh look at agricultural commodities and conduct a thorough exploration of the supply chain.
• We assess the commodities inside out. We identify all opportunities for growth and up-scaling production as we carefully weigh the risks.
• We construct a comprehensive analysis of all the factors and players involved.
• We get to know those involved in the value chain, or those who want to be involved, and then we act as a neutral facilitator to bring them together in partnership.
• Once partnerships are in place we define all the constraints and factors limiting growth.
• Then we really go to work: investment planning, coordinating and implementing all the innovative, comprehensive and sustainable solutions needed to scale-up and create efficiencies in production and increase trade for the benefit of all involved.
